Our Mission
Giving Back to Africa (GBA), a non-profit organization working in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), recognizes that a good education is fundamental to strong individuals, communities, and nations because it empowers individuals to unlock their innate abilities and direct their own lives. Despite living in a nation of tremendous natural wealth, many Congolese experience excruciating poverty made worse by the country's recent civil conflicts. Such conditions severely limit Congolese students' opportunities to attain a good education. We are an organization devoted to investing in human beings and offering opportunities through education as a way to work towards the common good of Congolese society.
The situation in Congo makes it impossible to adequately address any one issue in isolation, which is why GBA is dedicated to the development of partnerships with a variety of organizations in Congo, with an eye towards the development of local political, economic, and social infrastructure over time. We believe that investing in short-term projects will make our long-term goals more fully realizable. We also believe that small infusions of support provided consistently over a long period of time are more effective than large infusions of support for short periods of time. And, given the current situation in Congo, we acknolwedge that short-term investment in infrastructure can be a long-term investment in human capacity.
In order to fulfill this mission, our first projects span the education spectrum from primary through Masters-level schooling. These projects seek to:
- Implement a GBA Scholars program at the Protestant University of Congo that provides financial, curricular, and service learning opportunities designed to help university students apply knowledge learned in the classrom to real work situations, as a way to meet community needs and strengthen community assets;
- Support students and teachers in a primary school for orphans and street children (located outside of Kinshasa) and in an experimental secondary school (located in rural DRC) through donations of supplies, salaries, and infrastructure investment;
- Develop strong partnerships with primary, secondary, and university-level schools and foster relationships between schools and local communities.
